(From busy mom to another)
Let’s be honest – when the holidays roll around, most of us are juggling a thousand things: family visits, meal planning, shopping, and somehow keeping the kids entertained without them turning into screen zombies. Sound familiar?
As a mum with a never ending to do list, I’ve found some simple ways to sneak learning into holiday fun without anyone even realizing they’re doing it. Whether you are a fellow parent or an educator looking for ideas, here are some of my go-to tips to keep those little minds buzzing.
Turn Everyday Moments into Learning Opportunities

You don’t need a fancy flashcards or complicated lesson plans. Use what’s already happening around you!
Try this:
· Baking together? Talk about measurements, fractions or doubling recipes.
· Writing greeting cards? Let the kids help write messages – great for handwriting and spelling!
· Decorating? Count ornaments, sort by colour or size.
Keep Books Everywhere (Even in the Car)

We keep a little stash of books in the living room, kids’ bedrooms, and also in the car. During quieter moments – waiting for dinner or a sibling’s dance class – they might just pick one up on their own.
Get a few festive-themed books. Kids love reading about Santa, Easter rabbit and fairy tales.
Make it a Game (because who doesn’t love one?)

Kids are way more likely to engage if it feels like play.
Some quick ideas: Math Bingo with sweets as rewards or spelling challenges where they can earn points towards choosing a film to watch.
Use Tech in Moderation
I am not anti-screen (sometimes a tablet is the only way I get five minutes of peace). But there are some genuinely good educational apps out there. Just keep screen time balanced – half an hour of learning, then outside for some fresh air or creative play.
Encourage Journaling and Storytelling

A little notebook and some coloured pens can go a long way. Kids can draw what they did each day or write about their favourite holiday moments. You could also start a family story – each person adds a few lines. It always ends up silly and hilarious!
Let them lead the way

The school holidays are a chance to lean into what your child naturally enjoys. Got a nature lover? Go on a walk and talk about trees, animals and insects, or weather.
Have a little builder? Use Lego to explain engineering or storytelling. Budding artist? Turn art projects into lessons on colours, shapes, or even history of traditions around the world.
Final Thoughts from this Tired, Caffeinated Mum
The best learning happens when kids are curious, relaxed and having fun. The holidays don’t have to be a break from leaning – but they should be a break from pressure.
So give yourself grace. You don’t have to be perfect. If your child learns one new thing this week while laughing and feeling loved, you are absolutely doing enough!
Cheers to a happy, fun-filled holiday – with just the right amount of sneaky learning thrown in.
